This Week in Music 01.30.2013

It’s Monday so that means it’s time for This Week in Music. The weekly column where I keep you up to date with all of the week’s new releases as well as throwing in an opinion or two along the way. If for some reason you just want all of the information but without my opinions tacked on then I would recommend checking out our handy release calendar which can be found here.

This week’s post might be a bit of a shit show because I’m coming off of several nights with not much sleep thanks to the AKB48 Request Hour Top 100 but we’ll do our best with what we have. There’s some pretty good stuff coming out this week so let’s jump right in.

Berryz Koubou – “Berryz Mansion 9th Floor”

We’re starting things off this week with Berryz Koubou who are releasing their ninth studio album. Titled “Berryz Mansion 9th Floor”, the album features ten tracks and there’s a nice variety of songs on offer. From singles such as “WANT!” and “cha cha SING” to a “2013 version” of “Anata Nashi de wa Ikite Yukenai” and with some new songs in between, this album offers a lot for fans and newcomers alike. I’m not a massive Berryz fan or anything but I have to say that I have enjoyed their past couple of singles. If you want a nice collection of the past year of Berryz Koubou’s musical output then this is the release for you.

SKE48 – “Choco no Dorei

Next up we have SKE48 with new single “Choco no Dorei” which is a rather upbeat and catchy number. As someone who is a fairly big SKE fan as well as being of the opinion that they didn’t finish 2012 on a very strong note, this is the type of single that I want to see from this group. Not only is the a-side fantastic but b-side “Darkness” has been on constant loop these past few days. Sure “Bike to Sidecar” isn’t the greatest but it’s still okay. Then there’s “Sore wo Seishun to Yobu hi” which just walks up and hits you right in the feels. SKE48 appear to be off to a strong start in 2013, let’s hope they can keep it up.

Tokyo Girls Style – “Yakusoku

yakusoku

Tokyo Girls’ Style are also getting in on the action this week by releasing yet another album. It feels like we just had one from this group but apparently it has been almost a year. “Yakusoku” features various songs released by the group in the past year, such as “Bad Flower“, “LolitA☆Strawberry in summer” and “Tsuioku“. Also included are a cover of TRF’s “Overnight Sensation ~Jidai wa Anata ni Yudaneteru~”, an English version of “Himawari to Hoshikuzu” and a new song or two just to keep things interesting. While I’m not the biggest fan of Tokyo Girls’ Style’s more recent musical output, this album is still very much worth your time so go check it out.

ALSO THIS WEEK:

Yoropiku Pikuyoro” by Bakusute Sotokanda Icchoume
Wangan Wonder Darling / Raspberry Love” by Dancing Dolls
Chiku-Taku / Going My Way!” by LinQ
“First Album (Kari)” by Up Up Girls
Run!!” by Yamaguchi Kassei Gakuen

If you can’t watch the Dancing Dolls PV it’s because some record labels are still living in the fucking stone age and decide to region lock their shit. Apart from that, let me know what caught your eye this week and as always, I’m happy to take on any constructive criticism that you might have.

  1. I’m really happy with Choco no Dorei. The PVs are good, the songs are good, the choreography is good. The only thing that’s bad are those covers. Bike to Sidecar kind of gets overshadowed by the other songs, and although not a bad song it also doesn’t compel me to listen to it more than once.
