This Week in Music 05.29.2013

AKB48 dominated the charts again last week. Millions of copies sold, records broken, etc, etc. Who cares? Let’s talk about some music that’s actually interesting.

Dempagumi.inc – “Denden Passion

The first of this week’s two featured releases comes from dempa idol group Dempagumi.inc. The group is known for their high energy, off the wall music and striking PV imagery. “Denden Passion” delivers on all of these fronts and really is just a a lot of fun to listen to. If you’re into early Momoiro Clover, Shiritsu Ebisu Chuugaku and groups of that ilk then you’ve either heard of Dempagumi already or you should really be checking them out. Their music certainly isn’t for everyone that’s for sure, and it might be a little grating to begin with but it really does grow on you. If you like idols with tons of personality and flair then Dempagumi.inc are the group for you! They’ve also done a cover of the Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage” in the past. How cool is that?

Ono Erena – “Fighting☆Hero

Our other featured release this week comes from Ono Erena. “Fighting☆Hero” is her new single and I think she is really starting to come into her own as a solo artist. I was a little concerned in the beginning but if she keeps releasing songs as strong as this then I have no worries whatsoever. The song itself is a little bit disjointed in places but it showcases a vocal range that I wasn’t even aware that Ono possessed. Everyone called her the loli with a smoker’s voice but now she’s really tapping into that lower registry and the power in her vocals is just amazing. I think it’s really unfortunate that she doesn’t sell that strongly but I guess that’s what happens when you’re trying to be a legitimate artist in Japan. Still, this is a fantastic song and you should definitely check it out.

ALSO THIS WEEK:

Itsumo Soba ni” by Kuramochi Asuka
Idol Bakari Kikanaide” by Negicco

As for this week’s other releases, I don’t even know. Kuramochi Asuka releases an incredibly bland solo ballad and Negicco are doing some weird 80s inspired J-pop sound. If you’re going to check out either then I’d suggest Negicco because at least it’s interesting to listen to, even if it’s kinda jarring.
