This week’s pre-Tokyo Idol Festival featured releases come from Dancing Dolls, Fairies, Shiritsu Ebisu Chuugaku and Up Up Girls.
Our first featured release of the week comes from Dancing Dolls and their new single “DD Jump”. If parts of the song sound familiar to you then you’re probably hearing the sample of Morning Musume’s “Love Machine” that the group has used to create their single. You might feel a certain kind of way about sampling but hopefully you’ll agree that this is a really solid song. I’ve never really paid much attention to Dancing Dolls before this single but I’m certainly going to start doing so now. Initial perusing of their back catalog seems to suggest that it will be well worth my time.
Fairies are back again this week with a pretty rocking little number in the form of “Hikari No Hate Ni”. Sure it’s maybe not the most original or groundbreaking song ever but it does everything that it sets out to really well and is an enjoyable listen. Sadly all of the fuss around this release is coming from the PV which apparently uses some bleeding edge filming technique never before seen in idol PVs. The PV looks cool I guess but it doesn’t really alter my opinion of the song. Oh well, talking points are talking points I suppose. I just wish they’d let the music do more of the talking.
Shiritsu Ebisu Chuugaku – “Chuunin”
Moving right along, Ebichu have a new album out this week. “Chuunin” is their first major label album release and they’re giving fans plenty of bang for their buck. The release features the group’s 3 major label singles to date, “Kari Keiyaku no Cinderella“, “Ume” and “Te wo Tsunagou / Kindan no Karma” along with 13 other tracks for a total of 17. I personally enjoy Ebichu’s brand of idol pop, it’s like Momoiro Clover before they started going high concept and more mature. If you’ve never given Ebichu a chance before then I’d highly recommend picking up this album.
Last up for this week we have Up Up Girls and their latest multiple a-sided single “Summer Beam! / Up Up Typhoon”. “Summer Beam” is a very pleasant and upbeat song which could easily serve as an a-side on its own. However I can see why “Up Up Typhoon” was given the same billing. The song is incredibly infectious and has some great hooks. I think it’s very easily my favorite Up Up Girls song and I’d urge you to check it out even if you have zero interest in the group. These are the kinds of releases that make me love writing this column because I just want as many people to know about them as possible.
